Matinee 2.1 released, ohh pretty pictures
Abraham of Sintax software just sent word that Matinee 2.1 with DVD cover art support has been released. I have a feeling I wasn’t the only one bugging him for this feature, unfortunately I’m without a display for a few more days, so some of you other enterprising individuals will have to chime in with the yays or nays.
By the way, I’m told the cover art images will scale to fit the window, no need to worry about file size or dimensions. So point n’ click your way over to your favorite DVD cover art site (cough Amazon) and try it out.

I personally feel that DVD Empire has a better cover art for their products. Some are marked with “Copyright Image” at the bottom, but (cough Photoshop) they are of higher quality.

This totally rocks… I just updated my library (using Amazon) and love it.
What would be even cooler would be some use of the amazon web service to automatically pull the cover down.

Wow, some people are never satisfied! Seriously, I know that would probably be a better option for those users who are connected to the internet… time will tell.

Well… you have to think people reading this and downloading your software have an internet connection…

Oooooh, While you’re at it, they should automatically pull all the metadata from amazon. I love seeing the major actors, directors, producers, year released, and so on.
I guess I’d like to see Matinee and Delicious Library’s love-child.

VOBs vs. MP4 / DivX…?
I know this is an ever-present debate but do folks who happen to be doing MacMini home theatre prefer VOBs (archived DVDs) to compressed DivX / MP4 formats? File size isn’t a huge issue here but the smaller the files, the more I can archive to my system and the more media I can retire to binders in my closet…

In my humble opinion, go with VOB from Mactheripper. The quality is excellent (same as DVD) and you can use Matinee to launch your collection.
DIVX files are surprisingly good quality in my experience, but I think the time required to convert is only worth it if you plan on using the files on a portable device of some kind. Otherwise, hard drive space is cheap enough and only going to go lower.

Personally, I wouldn’t ever compress something I wanted to watch at home. Maybe like Jon said for a portable media player, but otherwise I want as many of the original bits as I can get.
